Galway, with a population of 65,000, is the ideal university town. For nearly 1000 years it has been the largest and most important city in the west of Ireland and while it has enjoyed an economic and cultural boom in recent years, it still retains a powerful and intimate sense of community. Galway has a thriving arts life, is the home of two internationally acclaimed theater companies, Druid and Macnas, and hosts an annual Arts and other cultural festivals.

The University

The National University of Ireland, Galway was founded in 1845 as Queen's College Galway. It became a constituent university of the National University of Ireland in 1997. The campus, built around the old university building, is situated close to Galway City on the banks of the River Corrib. The University operates a two semester system and has over 11,000 full-time students in seven faculties:
